The Community Solar Process

Clearway Community Solar Farms produce renewable solar electricity that goes to your community. Polluted energy sources are replaced with clean ones on the power grid.

In return, subscribers receive solar bill credits automatically applied to their utility bill, reducing their costs on their electricity bill.

Subscribers pay Clearway for the solar bill credits, and receive a guaranteed 20% discount every month. That means that for every $1.00 you receive in bill credits, you will only pay Clearway $.80.*

*Savings calculated as 20% on the value of the net metering credits generated by the residential solar subscription on the default supply service rate with the utility (ComEd or Ameren). Customers not on their utility default supply rate may not receive the same savings or any savings. Clearway is not responsible for utility delays in applying net metering credits.

A Closer Look at Solar Farm Subscriptions

Every month, local solar energy is generated by the Clearway solar farm you are assigned to. We have a number of farms in development in your area and they are in varying construction phases – our teams are building them.
The farms are all filled with subscribers on a first-come, first-served basis, and fill up quickly. Once full, we place customers on a wait list.
Once the solar farm’s construction is complete, the farm is connected to your utility and then begins production. Customers aren’t billed until production begins, so during this construction phase, your reservation on the solar farm is secured without any charges.
Currently, based on availability, your assigned solar farm would most likely begin actively producing power 6-9 months from now, depending on when you enroll on which solar farm project you are assigned to. If you choose to sign up, you would be kept up to date on your solar farm through email and in-home mail communications.

A Closer Look at Energy Savings

Once the farm is live, solar production and billing begins. For the solar energy produced by your portion of the solar farm, you receive bill credits – we call these “solar bill credits.”
The solar bill credits are applied to your Illinois utility bill, reducing that bill. To recap, you will continue to receive a monthly utility bill. But now, your National Grid bill will be reduced by credits you receive as a result of being a Clearway customer.
You will receive a separate bill from Clearway. Your Clearway bill is for the cost of the solar bill credits with your guaranteed 20% discount, provided that you are on your utility’s default supply rate.
Just as a reminder, you’re replacing dirty power on the grid with clean power and in return, getting 20% off.
In short, for every $1.00 in credits you receive on your utility bill, you only pay Clearway $.80 for that $1.00. If you received $100 in bill credits, you would only pay Clearway $80 for those solar bill credits.

Clearway: An Approved Vendor of Illinois Shines

Clearway Community Solar is an Approved Vendor of the Illinois Shines program, also known as the Adjustable Block Program or “ABP.” Illinois Shines is a state-administered program for new solar development and solar PV systems. Clearway’s Community Solar farms produce local solar power, and the Renewable Energy Credits, or “RECs” are sold to the Illinois Shines program to help Illinois reach its renewable energy goals.
